Our committees

CommitteesThe Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) and the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice (BCAP) are responsible for writing and updating the UK Advertising Codes. Chaired by James Best, the Committees are made up of representatives of advertisers, agencies, media owners and other industry groups, all of which are committed to upholding the highest standards in non-broadcast and broadcast advertising.

Committee of Advertising Practice

CAP writes the UK Code of Non-broadcast Advertising, Sales Promotion and Direct Marketing and helps enforce ASA rulings.

Established in 1961, the Committee and the Code marked their 50th anniversary in 2011.

Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice

The success of CAP’s regulation of non-broadcast ads encouraged Ofcom to contract-out the regulation of broadcast advertising to the ASA system. This led to the formation of a co-regulatory partnership and BCAP. BCAP writes the UK Code for Broadcast Advertising.
