Xenical (active ingredient: orlistat), a drug claimed to help obese people lose weight in conjunction with an energy-controlled diet, has recently received a marketing authorisation (product licence) in the UK and is available on prescription. Regulation 7 of part III of the Medicines Advertising Regulations 1994 prohibits the advertising of prescription medicines to the public. Members are asked to contact the Copy Advice team before accepting advertisements for Xenical or a similar product purporting to help people lose weight.
