On 24 August 1999 the Deregulation (Casinos) Order 1999 comes into force. The Order allows for limited advertising by licensed casinos. The new Codes, due to be launched on 1 October 1999, will contain two clauses that reflect the Order in explaining what advertising is permitted. They read as follows:· Licensed casinos can only use classified advertisements to advertise to the public. Such advertisements should be restricted to the name, address and other contact details of the premises, factual information about ownership, the facilities provided, those who may be admitted and how to apply for membership.· Advertising material other than classified may be sent only to the members of their own casinos. It is unlikely that the use of images (with the exception of logos) will be acceptable and we understand that the British Casino Association and the Gaming Board, who have drawn up guidelines on advertising, recommend that classified ads should be A5 or smaller. It is not yet clear what constitutes advertising (or classified advertising) on the internet. The new Codes will not have been launched when the Deregulation Order comes into force. Despite this, the Copy Advice team suggests that CAP members consider these clauses before accepting advertisements by licensed casinos.
