Students show they are savvy about self-regulation

05 March 2007

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is delighted to announce the winners of its Student Award Scheme 2007. The overall winner was Firaaz Faiz from Stockport Grammar School with the runners up being Raza Hussain, also from Stockport Grammar and Sarah Frankland from City of Leicester College.

The ASA Student Awards invited students studying business, media, marketing or advertising related courses to submit work that showed an accurate understanding of the self-regulatory system for controlling advertising content and the benefit it brings to consumers and the advertising industry.

This year’s awards saw a record number of the entries. The standard of work submitted to the ASA, especially in the under 18 category, was extremely high with many showing original thought and creativity. The awards were split into two categories, the first required students to write a critical appraisal of the advertising self-regulatory system and the second to create an advertising campaign for a healthy snack ensuring that it adhered to the advertising rules.

The winning entry from Firaaz Faiz was in category two where he demonstrated a clear grasp of how snack products can be advertised and what the advertising codes allow. He also produced an exceptional piece of artwork to illustrate his ad campaign. Similarly, Raza Hussain submitted a very high calibre piece of work in category two. Sarah Frankland chose category one and wrote an articulate and thought provoking piece of research that explored and challenged advertising regulation.

There were no awards distributed to the over 18 cateogry this year.  Instead a donation has been made to the National Advertising Benevolent Society (NABS).

Of winning the ASA Student Awards 2007, Firaaz Faiz said ““When I entered the competition I didn’t think that I had a chance of winning, especially a national competition held by such a large organisation. When I found out that I had won I was really surprised and pleased. I realised that a whole new door had opened for me and an opportunity had arisen where I could fulfil my future ambitions. It just goes to show that effort does eventually pay off.”

Organiser of the awards, ASA Communications Executive, Emma Cutting says “This year’s awards have proved a huge success both in terms of the number of entries and the quality of the work we have received. It made judging very difficult but also a great pleasure. We would like to thank all the students and teachers for their hard work and hope that they will be encouraged to enter again next year.”
