New appointments to ASA Council
07 March 2007
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) Chairman, Lord Borrie QC, has appointed two new Industry members to serve on the ASA Council – the body that adjudicates on advertising complaints.
James Best, Chief People and Strategic Officer, DDB Worldwide and Sally Cartwright OBE, Director at Large, Hello Ltd, will start work in April.
Mr Best will adjudicate on broadcast and non-broacast complaints, while Mrs Cartwright will serve on the non-broadcast council. They replace current industry members Dan O’Donoghue and Mike Ironside, both of whom are retiring from Council having served the maximum six years.
James Best is soon to step down from his role as Chief People and Strategic Officer of DDB Worldwide, Chairman of DDB University and President of DDB’s Middle East, Africa and India Regions. A past Chairman of BMP DDB and the UK Advertising Association, he has also served as President of the European Association of Communications Agencies (EACA). He is a Fellow and Council Member of the IPA.
Sally Cartwright joined Hello! Magazine in 1990 as Publishing Director and was appointed Director at Large last year. Her publishing career has included senior positions at IPC Magazines and in 1987 she was appointed Managing Director of Harmsworth Publications (part of Associated Newspapers). She is a past President of the Women’s Advertising Club of London and a former Chairman of the Periodical Publishers Association.
Welcoming Mr Best and Mrs Cartwright to their new roles, Lord Borrie said: “James and Sally bring a wealth of experience of advertising and media to the ASA Council. Their expertise will help ensure the Council’s decisions are both balanced and proportionate. I look forward to working with them both.”
Two-thirds of the 15-strong Council are Independent members. The ASA is currently recruiting for new Independent members following public advertisement.
