ASA Council Members Colin Philpott and Diane Whitworth

The Chairman of The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), Lord Borrie, QC, has appointed two new members to join the ASA Council: Colin Philpott, Head of the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television and Diana Whitworth, co-director of Grandparents Plus, a charity concerned with promoting the role of grandparents and extended family members in caring for children.

Colin Philpott took up the position of Head of the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in April 2004, following a 24-year career at the BBC, where he fulfilled a number of roles as reporter, producer, documentary maker and editorial manager. When he left the BBC, Colin held the post of Head of BBC Yorkshire.  Colin is very active in a number of arts projects and is Chair of Creative Partnerships in Bradford – an Arts Council initiative to bring schools and the creative sector together.

Before joining Grandparents Plus, Diana Whitworth was Chief Executive of Carers UK, a position that she held for over four years. This followed ten years in the role of Head of Public Affairs at the National Consumer Council and eight years working for the National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux. Diana is a member of the Big Lottery Fund board, the Economic and Social Research Council’s Strategic Research Board and the BBC Appeals Advisory Committee. Diana will consider complaints about non-broadcast advertisements only.

The new Council members will take up their posts next month, and replace Lord Lipsey and Pauline Thomas, both of whom are retiring from Council having served the maximum six years.

Commenting on the appointments, Lord Borrie said: “I am delighted to announce the appointments of Colin and Diana and am sure that they will make a valuable contribution to the work and decisions of the ASA Council.”
